There’s plenty to love about the luxurious and family-friendly Blue Palace Resort in Crete. Starting with its location, you’re in an undoubtedly convenient spot for the bars of Mirabello Bay and Elounda Town. However, it is the hotel’s hilltop position, stunning sunsets and views down to your own private beach that really place this resort among Crete’s best.
Such a setting is privileged indeed, as it also means the Cretan Sea and nearby Spinalonga Island are never out of sight, whether you are lounging on your villa’s patio, by the spectacular infinity pool, spa, or outdoor dining terrace, this is a veritable Mediterranean island paradise. Every effort has also been made to fuse that typical Greek style of white and blue, exposed stonework and terracotta hues that we all know and love, with an intentionally fashionable twist. So, while the reclaimed wooden stilts, thatched gazebos, mosaic tiles and chequered tablecloths look enchantingly traditional outside, within you’ll see contemporary furniture, Art Deco installations and a focus on creating both space and light throughout the communal spaces and suites. The result is a boutique Crete resort that feels exclusive, high-end and locally-inspired, leaving you under no illusion as to where you are in the world; thank goodness.
Take the short walk or lift down to the bay and the same rings true, as polished white pebbles welcome in a warm lapping sea that itself sits in front of private Blue Palace daybeds. The suitably rustic-chic Isola Beach Club lies close by with its tree trunk bar stools, sunken sofas and firepits, fresh seafood and zingy cocktails during a hot summer’s day, and yet another unforgettable perch to enjoy the sunset at dusk. There are five restaurants in all and a clutch of stylish lounge bars too, with everything from Asian-fusion food to prime grilled steaks, fine dining Cretan cuisine and beachside snacks on offer. Anyone looking to keep body-beautiful while on their exclusive escape to Crete can then work it all off in the gym, on the tennis court or during any of the weekly fitness classes, perhaps scuba diving, water-skiing, sailing or surfing, all of which can be easily arranged from the Blue Palace, as well as private boat hire for something a little more intimate.
Then there’s the Blue Palace Spa, boasting no less than 23 individual treatment rooms, many of which are semi-open-air and look out across the Sea of Crete. Relaxation therapies, oil-infused massage or beauty salon services, facials and scrubs await; though an afternoon could easily be spent simply unwinding in and around the heated thalassotherapy pool alone. This love of the finer things in life extends to the bungalows, suites and villas too, almost all of which have their own private, sea-facing infinity pool, a beautifully furnished sun patio, huge marble-clad bathroom, deep-soaking tub and rain shower. The Two-bedroom, Grand and Royal Villas in particular feel like mini residences within themselves, thanks to separate lounge areas, a walled garden, pool and superior sea views – perfect for families.
